Orange-winged Amazon Parrot (Amazona amazonica)
About me
| Basic Info | Home: | The tropics are just fine for my flapping - Colombia, Trinidad & Tobago, Peru and Brazil. |
|---|---|---|
| Size: | Me and all my squawking chums are roughly the same size, around the 13 inch mark. | |
| Favourite foods: | Is that a fruit I see? Or a nut? Or even a few seeds? Gimmie the lot! | |
| Environment: | Yep, we're birds, so it's not surprising to find us chilling high in trees. Tree cavities are ideal for nesting, no doubts there. | |
| Sounds like: | AAAAARRR!!! Polly wants a cracker!! (joke). SCCCRRREEEEEAAAAMMM!!! Although if I hear something enough I'll try to mimic it! |
| Further Info |
Like most parrots amazons are very sociable. They tend to spend their days in pairs and roost at night with up to 600 other birds. Sometimes there are so many parrots found together that in some of the countries where they live they are considered agricultural pests. Parrots are famous for mimicking human speech and can be taught to say several words, some have a vocabulary of up to 800 words. Our parrots at Amazonia have never been taught to talk but they do sometimes mimic some of the rainforest sounds that are around them all the time. These include frogs croaking, cockatiel song and occasional wolf whistles! Generally, they are high-maintenance pets because they are extremely intelligent and need a lot of attention and stimulation; they also have an intense need to chew particularly during the breeding season. Behavioural problems often arise if their needs are not met. Here at Amazonia, we do not recommend home pet parrots since their lifespan is often greater than that of the human owner and most people are unable to give them the constant attention they need. |
