Axil
Axolotl (Ambystoma mexicanum)
About me
| Basic Info | Home: | Ey Gringo! I am Axil the salamander from sunny Mexico! |
|---|---|---|
| Size: | I'm a 25cm adult, all my chums are about the same. | |
| Favourite foods: | Fajita! But with no one around with the skills to make fajitas we settle for algae and little insects in the water. Have you ever tried an algae fajita? Sounds sweet! | |
| Environment: | High up above sea level we hang out in the deep lakes and wetlands. | |
| Sounds like: | Arriba arriba! Not really, we don't make any sounds so deep underwater. |
| Further Info |
An Axolotl has an incredible ability to regenerate body parts such as limbs leading to extensive research on this species. Their habitat has become fragmented due to urban development and drainage around Mexico City and now consists of a network of canals and lagoons surrounding agricultural development. This, along with introduced species and pollution of the waterways has led to the critically endangered status. They perform an important role in the foodweb and a species/habitat action plan has been developed to protect the axolotl and its wetland habitat leading to the first time an amphibian has been used as a ‘flagship species’ for conservation. |
